What is Prior Learning Assessment?
Prior Learning Assessment is the evaluation of knowledge and skills that you’ve gained outside of a college or university classroom. You acquire prior learning through multiple experiences, such as your military training, deployments, on-the-job experiences, professional development training, volunteer and community service, informal online learning, and other experiences outside traditional academic institutions.
There a many ways colleges and universities evaluate this learning. You may be able to receive college credit based on the outcome of that evaluation.
How do I get credit for my military training?
The process starts with you!
Once you’ve been accepted at a Universities of Wisconsin campus or WTCS program,
- Make sure that you submit your Joint Services Transcript (JST) or Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) transcript to the campus you’re planning to attend.
- Make an appointment with the appropriate contact at your institution to discuss your career goals and educational plan. Find a contact on your campus.
- What can I expect?
Staff will review your JST or CCAF transcript alongside credit recommendations developed by the American Council on Education (ACE) Credit Recommendation Service. The advisor will work with you to determine the best way to apply any credits you are eligible for to your academic plan
