The Office of Learning & Information Technology Services (OLITS) is dedicated to supporting the use of technology to enhance the teaching and learning mission of the UW System institutions. OLITS staff have responsibility for systemwide collaboration and enhancement of six major areas of Information Technology: 1) overall systemwide IT planning, 2) technology for teaching and learning, 3) support for major IT infrastructure and administrative systems, 4) wide area networking issues, 5) library automation and collections enhancement, and 6) research and development in emerging technologies. In addition, OLITS develops and supports information technology systems and services that allow UW System Administration staff to perform their responsibilities effectively and efficiently.
POSITION SUMMARY
Completes varied, complex, and strategic system planning, installation, analysis, and issue resolution to support institutional and partner network connectivity and performance.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities include the following key activities:
⦁ Integrates, identifies, troubleshoots, monitors, and resolves moderately complex, routine, and varied supported services, systems, network, and application problems according to established processes and procedures
⦁ Serves as a point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, identifies needs, provides solution options, and communicates issue updates and resolutions
⦁ Participates in the evaluation of new vendor software releases and impact. Documents and communicates system enhancements or changes
⦁ Assists with the planning and coordination of system resources, upgrades, security, implementations, and integrations
⦁ Configures, maintains, upgrades, develops, and tests IT systems and services in alignment with industry best practices
⦁ Runs, maintains, and operates technical systems and infrastructure
⦁ Plans and directs staff implementation of small to medium technical projects as needed
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
⦁ Associate’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or 6 years of equivalent experience.
⦁ 4 or more years of experience configuring and managing complex network environments
⦁ 3 or more years of experience managing enterprise grade firewall systems (Cisco Firepower, Palo Alto, Fortinet, etc.)
⦁ Experience supporting and troubleshooting enterprise wireless LAN environments
⦁ Experience working as a member of a technical team providing IT support for an organization in a complex environment
⦁ Experience configuring and troubleshooting routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, etc)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
⦁ Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or 8 years of equivalent experience.
⦁ Experience working in multiple areas of infrastructure support (DNS, DHCP, VPN, Load Balancer, etc.)
⦁ Experience configuring and supporting IPv6 networks
⦁ Experience managing and troubleshooting fiber optic issues
⦁ Experience working in multi-vendor environments.
⦁ Experience evaluating and implementing or improving security measures on a large-scale network
⦁ Experience with wireless surveying tools and wireless deployment planning
⦁ Experience with interconnecting local networks with cloud service providers (AWS, Azure, etc.)
⦁ Experience supporting VMWare’s NSX virtual networking platform
⦁ Experience configuring and supporting SD-WAN solutions (Viptela/Cisco, Cato SASE, Aruba Edgeconnect, etc.)
⦁ Experience writing and maintaining scripts for infrastructure automation
⦁ Experience developing and documenting technical support procedures

WORK LOCATION
Telecommuting or hybrid work options may be available. The business office location is located at 780 Regent Street in Madison WI. Travel to UW Campuses, around the State, will be required. Preference will be given to candidates that reside within the state of Wisconsin. Telecommuting agreements are subject to change at any time.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The Network Engineer (official title: Network Engineer III or IV) is a full-time, salaried (exempt), academic staff, position.
Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary within a range of $80,000 – $95,000 (Network Engineer III) or $95,000 – $110,000 (Network Engineer IV). Title and salary will be determined commensurate with the candidate’s education, related experience, and qualifications.
