The WI-MA Task Force is charged with building an equitable and coherent PK-20 system of mathematics preparation so students have access to the array of post-secondary options afforded them. In doing so, stakeholders establish a Wisconsin PK-20 Mathematics Ecosystem that provides the teaching and learning opportunities students need for success.
The WI-MA Task Force is part of a multi-state effort directed at bridging the gaps between high school and college mathematics supported by the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences (CBMS) in collaboration with the Charles A. Dana Center and Achieve.
In Fall 2022, Wisconsin joined 19 other states as part of the Dana Center’s three-year Launch Years Initiative to bridge the learning & teaching of students’ mathematics experiences from their early years through their first semesters at a UW institution. Over the next three years, the Launch Years Initiative will provide technical assistance to help Wisconsin meet its four goals.
WI-MA Task Force Goals
- WI-MA Goal #1: Create a structure to develop internal and external student learning outcome coherence between PK-12 and each identified post-secondary gateway mathematics course. (Coherence)
- WI-MA Goal #2: Create structures that increase students’ access to relevant content and research-based practices in the mathematics curriculum along the PK-20 education pipeline. (Equity)
- WI-MA Goal #3: Expand the current definition of college and career readiness so it reflects research and best practice in students’ preparation for post-secondary mathematics. (Wisconsin Mathematics Ecosystem Coherence)
- WI-MA Goal #4: Create conduits between and among other state-wide initiatives to improve students’ access to, and participation in, the mathematics-based knowledge economy. (Equity and Coherence)

Guiding Principles
The WI-MA Task Force prioritizes actions that build/enhance structures to improve all students’ access and choice to quality mathematics in preparation for all post-secondary experiences.
We accomplish this work by:
1. Providing choice, flexibility, and opportunities in students’ decision-making about mathematics course taking.
2. Identifying actions with an eye on increasing students’ success in mathematics.
3. Focusing on Strategies that empower underrepresented students’ mathematics identity.
