If you transfer to a State of Wisconsin agency from the Universities of Wisconsin or to the Universities of Wisconsin from a State of Wisconsin agency, your benefits will end the last day of the month in which your transfer occurs. You must take action with your new employer within 30 days of the start of your new position to maintain your benefits.
If you transfer from the Universities of Wisconsin to a State Agency, UW-Shared Services, Service Operations will send you a notice that outlines your continuation or conversion rights. These rights are for the benefit plans you were enrolled in at the time of termination from the Universities of Wisconsin. Benefits Available at Other State Agencies
To maintain your benefit enrollments for the following benefit plans through your new state agency position, submit application(s) to your new state agency benefits contact within 30 days of your start date:
- State Group Health Insurance*
- Dental Insurance (includes uniform, preventive, select, and select plus plans)*
- Vision Insurance*
- State Group Life Insurance
- Accident Insurance*
- Income Continuation Insurance
- Flexible Spending Account*
- Health Savings Account
*If you have less than a 30-day break in service between transferring state agencies, you must continue the same plans and coverage levels with the new agency.
You may change or cancel coverage midyear for the following plans:
- State Group Life Insurance
- Income Continuation Insurance
- Health Savings Account (contributions only)
Wisconsin Retirement System Account
The Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) covers all eligible state employees. If you are eligible for the WRS at your new state agency, no action is necessary to continue WRS contributions.
Wisconsin Deferred Compensation 457 Program
If you contribute to the Wisconsin Deferred Compensation (WDC) 457 Program, confirm your contribution amount with your new state agency to ensure contributions continue. You must inform the WDC Program directly of the change to your employer.
Benefits Not Available at State of Wisconsin Agencies
Some benefits are only available to Universities of Wisconsin employees.
If you transfer to a State of Wisconsin agency, your coverage ends the last day of the month in which your Universities of Wisconsin employment terminates.
You may convert coverage to an individual policy. To do so, submit a conversion application and first premium directly to Securian within 31 days of the coverage end date. Contact UW-Shared Services, Service Operations at serviceoperations@support.wisconsin.edu or (888) 298-0141 (7:45-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday) for a conversion application.
If you transfer to the Universities of Wisconsin from a State of Wisconsin agency, you will have an enrollment opportunity in the Individual & Family Life Insurance Plan. You will receive notice of your enrollment opportunity. If you decide to enroll, you have 30 days from your transfer date.
If you transfer to a State of Wisconsin agency, your coverage ends the last day of the month in which your Universities of Wisconsin employment terminates.
You may convert your coverage to an individual policy. To do so, contact Zurich American Insurance Company at (888) 634-6780 within 60 days of your coverage end date. (reference Policy # GTU-8364005.) Contact UW-Shared Services, Service Operations at serviceoperations@support.wisconsin.edu or (888) 298-0141 (7:45-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday) for a conversion application.
If you transfer to the Universities of Wisconsin from a State of Wisconsin agency, you will have an enrollment opportunity in the Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance Plan. You will receive notice of your enrollment opportunity and can enroll or cancel coverage at any time.
If you transfer to a State of Wisconsin agency, your contributions will end automatically on your last paycheck. Contact your recordkeeper(s) for information about your account and distribution options.
If you transfer to the Universities of Wisconsin you can enroll in the UW 403(b) Supplemental Retirement Program at any time.
Your sick leave balance will transfer to the State agency.
Your vacation and banked leave hours may transfer. Accepting vacation and banked leave is at the discretion of the hiring authority. If hours are not accepted by the State agency, they will be paid out as a lump sum.
Personal Holiday balances will be paid out as a lump sum.

Beneficiary Designations
Remember to review and update your beneficiary designations when you have a life event to make sure that your benefits are paid according to your wishes. Benefit plans that have beneficiary designations include life insurance plans, retirement plans and the health savings account.
