Overview

The Miscellaneous Leave Policy establishes guidelines for granting paid leave for jury duty, voting, and serving as an election official during working hours. The policy also provides for a paid leave of absence in certain circumstances after an employee is held hostage and outlines leave usage upon the death of an immediate family member.

Jury Duty

All employees who earn sick leave are eligible for leave with pay when summoned for grand or petit jury duty. While on jury duty you will receive your regular salary in addition to juror pay. When not impaneled for actual service and only on call, report back to work unless authorized by the institution to be absent.

Time Off to Vote

All employees who earn sick leave are eligible for up to 3 hours of leave with pay to vote during the employee’s regular working hours if the employee is unable to vote during non-working hours.

All Universities of Wisconsin employees are entitled to leave to vote during the employee’s regular working hours, but only those who earn sick leave are eligible for a leave with pay to vote.

Election Official Time Off on Election Day

Employees who serve as an election official for public elections under the authority of the municipal clerk may serve without loss of pay for scheduled work hours on election day, provided they request leave at least 7 days prior to the election.

The employee may elect to receive his/her UW System pay or the pay received as an election official. If state pay is elected, the pay earned as an election official will be deducted from the Universities of Wisconsin pay. If an employee uses paid leave (for example, vacation or personal holiday) on election day, pay earned as an election official will not be deducted from the Universities of Wisconsin pay.

Hostage Leave

If an employee suffers an injury (for example, physical or psychological) as a result of being taken hostage, the employee may be eligible for a leave with pay for up to 45 calendar days from the date of the conclusion of the hostage event.

Leave Usage upon the Death of an Immediate Family Member

Employees in a sick-leave earning appointment may use accrued sick leave or any other accrued paid leave after the death of an immediate family member. Leave may be used within 14 calendar days and up to three dates of sick leave may be used after the death of an immediate family member. An additional four days of sick leave may be used for travel time related to a funeral or other circumstances after the death of an immediate family member. Institutions can approve reasonable requests for additional time off or use of additional sick leave on a case-by-case basis.

Employees may also choose to use other paid leave (for example, vacation or personal holiday) instead of sick leave.
