Long-Term Care Insurance covers services that are typically not covered by health insurance but are vital for the patient, such as assistance with activities of daily living (for example, walking, eating, bathing). This type of insurance may provide some financial protection from the rising costs of long-term care. Coverage for care in non-institutional settings, such as assisted living, adult day care, and in-home care, is also available.

Eligibility

Long-Term Care Insurance is available to you, your spouse, your parents and your spouse’s parents. Anyone covered by the plan must live in Wisconsin.

Enrollment

You may apply for coverage at any time. You will be subject to medical underwriting. Some illnesses or pre-existing conditions may make you ineligible for coverage. However, once the policy is issued, coverage will not be limited or exclude any pre-existing conditions or illnesses. The Office of the Commissioner of Insurance (OCI) publishes a free Guide to Long-Term Care (PI-047) to help you evaluate your needs and rights. Contact OCI at (800) 236-8517 to request a copy. If you are interested in a long-term care insurance policy, refer to the information in the Insurance Carriers section below.

Premiums

Premiums are determined by age, gender and individual health at the time of your application. You pay the full premium for this insurance; there is no employer contribution. Premium payments can be made by:

  • Automatic transfer from bank account
  • Direct billing

Under federal law, long-term care premiums may not be taken on a pre-tax basis.
