MADISON, Wis. – University of Wisconsin System President Ray Cross announced today that Cheryl Green has agreed to serve as UW-Whitewater’s interim Chancellor. Green, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at UW-Oshkosh, will step into the new role on Jan. 1, 2019.
After consulting with leaders of the UW System Board of Regents and members of the UW-Whitewater campus community, Cross identified Green as someone who will provide effective leadership for the UW-Whitewater campus at a key time, while a search is launched for a new chancellor.
Prior to joining UW-Oshkosh, Green served as Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs at Tennessee State University. She brings more than 25 years of experience working in higher education and student affairs, as well as 14 years of experience in administration.
“We are fortunate to have someone with Dr. Green’s considerable experience and leadership skill, who can provide an important sense of stability during this transition period,” said President Cross.
In addition to providing daily leadership for UW-Whitewater, Green will be responsible for the important academic and student success initiatives that support the university’s record retention and graduation rates.
“Dr. Green is well prepared to keep this institution moving forward with efforts to expand undergraduate research and entrepreneurship, while preserving educational access for Wisconsin citizens,” said Regent President John Robert Behling.
Before her time at Tennessee State, Green served at Chicago State University in a variety of roles, including director/chair of the counseling department, dean of first-year student experience, acting associate director of career placement, and as a counseling professor. She also served as director of career planning and placement at University of Michigan-Flint. In addition, Green served as the statewide representative for 2,700 faculty and staff in her role as the grievance officer for seven public universities in Illinois.
Green has a Ph.D. and master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Southern Illinois University and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Manchester College (now Manchester University) in Indiana. She also holds a National Incident Management System certificate from the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Institute, has been trained in crisis intervention, and is recognized as an expert in grievance mediation and conflict resolution.
A nationwide search for a new UW-Whitewater chancellor will be launched in early 2019. Cross will consult with UW-Whitewater faculty, staff, students, and others about the best ways to organize that search committee.
Celebrating its sesquicentennial in 2018, UW-Whitewater serves more than 13,000 students at its Whitewater and Rock County campuses.
