MADISON, Wis. – Oct. 9, 2012 – Competitive Wisconsin, Inc. (CWI) today released a study of the state’s workforce needs, undertaken in partnership with ManpowerGroup. University of Wisconsin System President Kevin P. Reilly released the following response to that study, “Be Bold 2: Growing Wisconsin’s Talent Pool.”
“We appreciate Competitive Wisconsin’s strategic analysis of the state’s near- and long-term workforce needs. This report enriches our understanding of the state’s challenges, and underscores the importance of sustaining a robust talent pipeline.
“The UW System has a history of aligning educational strategies with the state’s economic development needs. Business and management fields have become the most popular areas of study among our undergraduate students. In recent years, we’ve also seen big gains in the number of students earning UW degrees in critical fields like healthcare and those related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
“Across all areas of study, more UW students are staying in school, completing their degrees faster, and transferring more seamlessly from one campus to another. But we can do more. Colleges and universities, both public and private, must continue to work together in a strategic, innovative manner that engages employers, economic development professionals, lawmakers, and other stakeholders. In addition, the UW System will intensify its research efforts to help create more well-paying jobs in Wisconsin, in ways that will retain and attract talented citizens. Together, we can give Wisconsin a competitive edge.”
