MILWAUKEE – The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents selected new leaders on Friday (June 6), electing Toby E. Marcovich of Superior as president and David G. Walsh of Madison as vice president.
Marcovich, vice chair of the Regents’ Executive Committee, succeeds Guy A. Gottschalk of Wisconsin Rapids as Regent president. Marcovich began his service as a UW regent in 1997 and previously served as chair of the Regents’ Business and Finance and Personnel Review committees.
Marcovich was elected unanimously after Gottschalk withdrew his nomination. “Thank you for all of your support and confidence,” Marcovich told the board after its vote. “I hope that I’m worthy of it in the coming year.”
A partner in the Marcovich, Chochrane & Milliken law firm in Superior, Marcovich is a current member of the Lawyer Pilots Bar Association and the American Academy of Trial Lawyers. A UW System alumnus, Marcovich earned his bachelor’s degree in economics and law degree from UW-Madison.
Walsh was appointed to the Board of Regents in January. He serves as vice chair of the Business and Finance Committee and also is a member of the Personnel Matters Review Committee. A partner in the Madison law office of Foley & Lardner, he represents cable television and telephone companies and is general counsel to the Wisconsin Cable Communications Association. He owns several cable systems in Wisconsin and is also an owner of the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team.
Walsh serves on the UW HealthStar Advisory Board, the Future Madison Board of Directors, and the UW Athletic Advisory Board. He is a former chairman of the University of Wisconsin Business School Advisory Board and received the Distinguished Business Alumnus Award from the UW Business School in 1997. He is a graduate of UW-Madison and received his law degree from Harvard Law School.
The board on Friday also unanimously re-elected several other board officers, including Board Secretary Judith A. Temby, Assistant Board Secretary Cheryle Goplin, Trust Officer Deborah Durcan and Assistant Trust Officers Patricia Brady and Douglas Hoerr.
The board officers will serve one-year terms.
