The Senate Committee On Transportation, Veterans, & Military Affairs held a public hearing on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, and heard SB 446: UW MIA Project – The University of Wisconsin Missing-in-Action Recovery and Identification Project and making an appropriation. The committee did not take any action on this bill.

President Ray Cross, Regent President Andrew S. Petersen, and Regents José Delgado and Becky Levzow joined UW-Oshkosh Chancellor Andrew Leavitt for a series of events at UW-Oshkosh on Tuesday, October 22, for the fifth stop of UW System’s All In Wisconsin tour. The tour is intended to demonstrate how the UW System meets the needs of Wisconsin and to generate additional ideas for the future. See the news release for a full recap.

Next stop for the “All in Wisconsin” tour will be UW-Oshkosh on Tuesday, October 22, 2019. The event will showcase the incredible value this campus provides for students, families, and taxpayers. The day-long event will involve meetings with business and community leaders, direct engagement with students, and media opportunities to promote the benefits and value of the campus to its region. There are three remaining events scheduled through early December. The dates are as follows:

  • UW-Eau Claire & UW-Stout, Wednesday, November 20
  • UW-Whitewater, Thursday, December 5

The Assembly Committee on Education will hold a public hearing on Thursday, October 24, 20119 starting at 10:00 a.m. The Committee will hear the following bill relating to UW System:

  • AB 531: ID Card Info- requiring that student identification cards include contact information for suicide prevention hotlines.

The Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System will hold a preliminary public hearing on Friday, November 15, 2019 on the proposed scope statement to amend Chapter UWS 18, Wis. Admin. Code, to address conduct on University lands related to improper use of email and other electronic communications and of telephones to harass another person. The public comment period on this scope statement will be open through Wednesday, November 20, 2019.

On Thursday, October 17, the Assembly Committee on Colleges and Universities held a public hearing on AB 452-the University of Wisconsin Missing-in-Action Recovery and Identification Project and making an appropriation. Staff from UW-Madison, as well as Regent Torrey Tiedeman, that manage and participate in the UW MIA RIP program testified at the hearing. The Assembly bill is scheduled for an executive session on October 23rd, and the Senate companion bill is scheduled for a public hearing on October 22nd.

Dave Erdman, Director of Capital Finance at the Department of Administration, informed the Commission that he anticipates scheduling a bond sale in December.  The Commission approved the issue of new bonds as well as refinancing bonds should interest rates be favorable.

 

On Wednesday, October 16, Governor Tony Evers signed SB 266-Health insurance for surviving families of officers killed in the line of duty into law. The bill ensures that the surviving immediate family of fallen state and local law enforcement officers, including firefighters, EMS first responders, and UW-System campus police officers continue to receive healthcare insurance coverage after the loss of a loved one in the line of duty.
