UW-Whitewater Chancellor Corey King and university mascot Willie Warhawk recently visited eight Whitewater area businesses/organizations, expressing gratitude for their support of the university and the Universities of Wisconsin. These visits — documented on video and being shared on social media this week — demonstrate the mutually beneficial relationships that exist between the university and the community.
A Week of Community Engagement
UW-Whitewater’s “Mascots on Main” initiative kicked off with a visit to First Citizens State Bank, a great community partner.
The spotlight then shifted to Center Street Cafe, owned by UW-Whitewater alumnus Kevin Bezat, a testament to the university’s impact on local entrepreneurship.
The initiative also highlighted The Book Teller, owned by UW-Whitewater graduate Karen McCulloch, emphasizing the university’s role in retaining talent within the state.
A stop at Dale’s Bootery, owned by Bob Herold, further emphasized the connection between the university and downtown Whitewater businesses.
The focus on Edgerton Hospital highlighted UW-Whitewater’s role in addressing regional workforce needs, particularly in healthcare, through programs like the nursing collaborative with Edgewood College.
“Mascots on Main” also visited Pro Landscape Supply, which supports the Regents Award-winning Campus Garden program, underscoring the university’s commitment to sustainability.
The initiative also recognized HSI Rentals for providing housing for UW-Whitewater students, acknowledging the importance of student life within the community.
A visit to Fairhaven Senior Services showcased a close neighbor of campus where students, faculty, and staff engage with residents — including former Chancellor Gaylon Greenhill and his wife Hannah — throughout each year.
Economic and Social Impact
The “Mascots on Main” initiative highlights UW-Whitewater’s significant economic impact on the region. A recent study by the Fiscal and Economic Research Center revealed that UW-Whitewater contributes over $500 million in economic activity to the area. The university’s 38,000+ alumni living in Wisconsin generate $890 million in economic output, demonstrating the long-term impact of a UW-Whitewater education.
By highlighting these partnerships, UW-Whitewater strengthens its ties with local businesses and organizations while showcasing the many ways UW-Whitewater contributes to the economic and social fabric of Whitewater and the state of Wisconsin.
