UW-Stevens Point Chancellor Thomas Gibson and UWSP mascot Stevie Pointer recently participated in the Universities of Wisconsin’s “Mascots on Main” initiative, visiting local businesses and organizations in Stevens Point. These visits — documented on video and being shared on social media this week — demonstrate the mutually beneficial relationships that exist between the university and the community.
The tour included Emy J’s, an ice cream shop owned by a UWSP alumna that employs alumni and students. The visit highlighted the contributions of UWSP graduates to the local economy and the work experience opportunities provided to students.
Bria Bella & Co., a clothing boutique also owned by a UWSP alumna, was another stop. The visit emphasized the university’s support for alumni businesses and the role of student employees in the retail sector.
Chancellor Gibson and Stevie also visited Process, a zero-waste home goods shop. The visit underscored the shared commitment to sustainability between UWSP and the business.
Fall Line Outfitters Co., an outdoor gear store, was also included in the tour. The store employs UWSP students and alumni, providing relevant experience for students in natural resources programs.
Chancellor Gibson and Stevie enjoyed a meal at Wicked Willow, a vegan restaurant employing UWSP students. The visit highlighted the diverse employment opportunities available to students within the community.
The tour concluded with a visit to the downtown Stevens Point district, led by its UWSP-alumna Executive Director. The visit emphasized the importance of student involvement in the downtown area and the role of UWSP graduates in its continued development.
By highlighting these partnerships, the “Mascots on Main” initiative served to strengthen relationships between UWSP and the Stevens Point community, recognize alumni contributions, and highlight the importance of student engagement with local businesses.
