Meet Sammie – her passion for design began in high school, where she took three art classes and knew that she would continue to expand her horizons as a Design major at UW-Green Bay. Designers are creative thinkers who use psychology, math, and history in their work. As Sammie puts it, “It’s both your left and right side of your brain working simultaneously, and that’s a very powerful thing.” Listen to Sammie’s thoughts, below.

I decided to take three art classes in high school and that was kind of the beginning of the journey for me. I knew that I could expand my horizons by continuing to follow with that passion and that’s why I decided to major in Design Arts at UW-Green Bay.

As a design major get to choose which path you want to take. So, you can take the Graphic Design, otherwise you can take the Environmental Design. In the Environmental Design, you’re learning about how to design a three-dimensional space inside, outside. And there’s also science and psychology that you learn about why people are drawn to specific color patterns and what color vibrations are and all of these things that make consumers and people react to specific way and you can use those things to your advantage to create a really great outcome.

With Graphic Design, there are three Studio courses, 1,2 & 3, and from there, there’s also Advanced Studio courses.

My favorite Design Arts class right now is called the Design Publication Workshop. And what it is, is the production and the publishing of a magazine called the Voyageur Magazine. And we work together and the designers are responsible for creating visual spreads and making people want to read it and being creative and thinking outside the box and it combines psychology, math, history. It’s both your left on your right side of your brain working simultaneously and that’s a very powerful thing.

There are opportunities like the Senior Shows, where you can focus on one specific project. You’re presenting it to a large group of people, so it’s a really cool way to encapsulate that education. And secondly, get what you’re making out there and kind of differentiate yourself from a majority of the market and market yourself as a designer.

I mean design is everywhere. Design is in every field in my opinion and you can be a graphic designer. You can be an environmental designer. You can design architecture or anything like that. For me, I really like working in a team and kind of seeing everybody flourish in their own skills and that’s kind of why I think for me, I would like to be on a team of creatives as an art director.
